We joke and speculate about this around the fandom quite a bit, but it’s only expanded on briefly in the Ultra Galaxy Legends movie, other side material and stage shows.

This time though, with their full knowledge of why he is leaving at the most inopportune moment. This makes for one of the most powerful scenes in the entire series, seeing Leito say good-bye to his family. Knowing this, but also knowing the stakes of this last-ditch effort, he and Leito summon the courage to do it again, even if it means laying down his life in the process. Even with the Beyond fusion, Zero had a hard time keeping up against Belial’s less-powerful Chimeraberos fusion in the mid-season. But Zero is still de-powered from his previous battle before the start of Geed‘s events. Our heroes devise a plan to weaken Belial’s power and trap him in another dimension to end his threat to this Earth, and it relies on Zero fighting him to a standstill. Now in his ultimate fusion form, Belial Atrocious, he starts harvesting King’s scattered light, weakening the firmament of the universe and threatening to re-start the Crisis Impact. But this advent is even more frightening after he revived himself by not just stealing the Empera and Dark Lugiel capsules, but forcibly vivisecting Kei to gain his own alien abilities to absorb energy. Here’s how that theme is developed: Episode 24īelial first coming to Earth in episode 16 was a big “oh shit” moment for viewers. But Geed takes it a step further to also illustrate the importance of fighting to save those who have given up hope, refused compassion, and who have fallen away from the light.

Not just in their ability to defeat enemies, but to understand and sympathize with the enemies they face.Ī consistently central theme of Ultraman series is that one’s power is best used to protect others, rather than simply destroying one’s enemies. But the finale introduces another twist which helps to show just how powerful their compassion is. In this way, the strength they gain paradoxically through acknowledgement of weakness and reliance on others helps them triumph in every fight. After all, compassion broken apart literally into its semantic roots means “to suffer with” (com – passion). That humility then allows them to form bonds and empathize with those around them. The characters all understand the proper use of power as a result of acknowledging their own personal weaknesses. Then in episode 17, we see how their empathy and compassion is rooted in a sense of humility. It is the source of both their strength and their eventual victory over the obstacles they face. The events of the mid-season illustrated that the bonds of love provide the main strength which define Riku, Laiha, Leito and Zero as heroes. I first started developing this idea when I discussed episode 12. However, Geed stands apart from even those series in respect to how personal its theme of compassion and mercy becomes to all the main characters, as well as the figures towards whom that compassion is directed. Some series emphasize that point more than others, such as Cosmos, and X to a lesser degree too.

Ultraman shows in general have always emphasized compassion. Even in the earliest days, the shows presented sympathy to the monsters the heroes face. And to my great pleasure, it came together in a really engaging way – almost shocking in how powerfully emotional that final expression of its themes became. Rather than repeating myself multiple times while discussing those episodes, I wanted to focus on how it all comes together in the finale. However, I wanted to hold off on talking about this show until the finale because most of what happens in this back half ties into very similar overarching themes.
